Parish News and Updates

1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.  If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection.  The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.
On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together,  would not exceed the main meal in quantity.

Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast.
On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten.  Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of  abstinence.

2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and  Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole is a serious obligation.
3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as  penance.
4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*)  extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 5, 2017 to The Solemnity of the Most  Holy Trinity, June 11, 2017.

*Canon 920, 1.  All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.

This Lenten season, all parishioners are invited to participate in a Scripture-based, faith-sharing program conducted by Fr. Bill. Each week in Lent, we will meet to examine the upcoming Sunday Readings, looking at them in their historical and spiritual contexts and discussing how to apply their meaning to our own lives today.
Participants will develop their own insights and understandings of the Scriptures, sharing them and their personal experiences in living the Gospel.
The goals of this program are: To deepen our knowledge of God’s revealed Word, to answer more readily the call to repentance and conversion that is central to the Lenten Season, to encourage one another in our shared discipleship of Christ, and to know the richness of the everpresent Love of God for each and every one of us in our daily lives.
The first meeting will take place the evening of March 2nd, the first Thursday after Ash Wednesday, at 7:00 pm in the Spirituality Room. Subsequent meetings will take place on each of the Wednesday evenings of Lent at 7:00 pm in the Spirituality Room.

We are often reminded by our Holy Father Pope Francis and Sacred Scripture that in order to love one another we must share the blessings which God has provided to us. In Acts, Chapter 4, we learn that the early church shared all possessions with one another so that the Apostles and early Christian communities could fully proclaim “the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. There was no needy person among them.”

We are called to similarly share what is granted to us by God and return it to Him so that not one of our brothers and sisters goes without: without the gift of faith; without the essential human needs; and without a personal relationship with Our Lord. We are called to Share God’s Blessings, and when we do, we find freedom and joy in proclaiming the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus, just as the Apostles did over 2,000 years ago!

Will you join your brothers and sisters in Sharing God’s Blessings? Our goal has been reduced by $17,868.00. The parish goal for 2017 is $34,500.00.
